Sexual Addiction: Review of the Conquer Series: The Battle Plan for Purity
Written by Dr. Henry Virkler, Ph.D.
In 2002, Steve Arterburn wrote a book called Every Young Man’s Battle, which discussed the challenges Christian young men face living in a world of sexual temptation. However, talking with scores of Christian men in the intervening years has shown that this is a challenge nearly every Christian man of any age faces. The humorous anecdote of a young priest talking with an older mentor illustrates this: Reportedly, the young priest asked his mentor, “When will I be free of the temptations of the flesh?” The older priest replied, “I wouldn’t trust myself until I’ve been dead three days.”
Whether it’s the normal sexual temptations that most Christian men face or a situation that meets the criteria for sexual addiction, the Conquer Series contains hundreds of ideas that will be helpful to Christian men as they attempt to live a life of sexual purity. Drawing from the work of established experts in the field such as Patrick Carnes, Judith Reisman, Doug Weiss, Joe McIlhaney, Tim Jennings, Jess Moody, and the leaders of several men’s ministries, the seminar leader, Dr. Ted Roberts, weaves a program that integrates Scripture, recent findings from brain neuropsychology, and practical strategies that will be helpful to every man of any age who takes this course. I have taught graduate-level courses in Human Sexuality at a Christian university and have studied sexual temptation and sexual addiction for the last 20 years and even then, I learned many new things by watching these videos. I highly recommend this series to pastors, churches, and to any Christian man who wants to strengthen his own life and lead a support group for men in his church.
